Glove and Gauntlet Service
Service Scope
Assessment and custom fabrication of gloves for hand trauma patients to deal with various sequelae such as amputations, cold intolerance, and vibration intolerance. Often a follow-up service to Hand Program.
Referral Criteria
General Referral Criteria
While each specialty program has specific referral criteria, they all share some general criteria for referral. Refer when:
- There is a need to clarify a diagnosis;
- Prognosis, level of impairment, or appropriate treatment is unclear;
- The injured worker has not returned to work after normal healing times;
- Divergent medical opinions exist.
With general referral guidelines in mind, refer patients to this clinic in the following circumstances:
- Cases involving a hand injury that can benefit from custom made or modified gloves, gauntlets, or mitts.
For custom gloves:
- loss of minimum of 4 phalanges;
- nerve laceration or injury;
- replantation of digits; or
- vascular impairment.

For custom gauntlets:
- wrist or carpal instability, thumb and wrist instability or
- osteoarthritis that worker could benefit from splinting
