Hand Program
Service Scope
Specialized assessment and treatment of injuries affecting hand function. These include dominance retraining, assessments of ability to carry out daily activities, aesthetic prosthesis screens, psychological assessments, and functional abilities evaluations.
Referral Criteria
General Referral Criteria
While each specialty program has specific referral criteria, they all share some general criteria for referral. Refer when:
- There is a need to clarify a diagnosis;
- Prognosis, level of impairment, or appropriate treatment is unclear;
- The injured worker has not returned to work after normal healing times;
- Divergent medical opinions exist.
With general referral guidelines in mind, refer patients to this clinic in the following circumstances:
Longer than normal healing times after trauma:
- Soft tissue injury (3 months post-trauma)
- Simple finger fracture (3 weeks post-trauma)
- Compound finger fracture (6 weeks post-trauma)
- Complex hand fracture (3-6 months post-trauma)
- Digital amputations (3 months after trauma)

Longer than normal recovery times after surgery:
- Replantations (6-9 months post-surgery)
- Major nerve repair (6-12 months post-surgery)
- Minor nerve repair (4-5 months post-surgery)
- Carpal tunnel or other nerve release (3 months post-surgery)

Other criteria:
- Difficult surgical or rehabilitation problems
- Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)
- Psychogenic problems arising from hand or upper extremity trauma
