Consultation on occupational disease draft policies
Beginning June 4, 2008, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is inviting comments from the public on three occupational disease draft policies.
The draft policies will help provide a solid and clear platform for fair and consistent occupational disease policy development and adjudication at the WSIB.
Submissions will be accepted until October 1, 2008 on the following draft policies:
Please note that a post-consultation report will be prepared and feedback will be considered before submitting the final policies to the Board of Directors. A copy of the Chair’s Report– along with other material from the WSIB’s consultation in 2004 – is attached on this page for your review.
The three draft policies provide guidance on the use of legal principles and scientific evidence in:
- Placing an occupational disease into Schedule 3 or 4
- Developing policies for compensating occupational disease claims
- The decision-making in occupational disease claims.

Background Information and Updates – Final Report of the Chair of the Occupational Disease Advisory Panel
The Final Report of the Chair of the Occupational Disease Advisory Panel was approved by the Board of Directors of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) on June 9, 2005 for implementation.
Occupational disease adjudicators and appeals resolution officers were trained to apply the principles in the report in their daily work.
Upon approval of the draft policies, the Occupational Disease Policy & Research Branch will review the recommendations from the seven outstanding Occupational Disease Panel reports.
The Chair's Final Report recommended the creation of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Occupational Disease (SACOD) to provide expert scientific advice at various stages of occupational disease policy development and disease scheduling. Members named to the committee recently were:
- Dr. Ben Amick III, Institute of Work and Health
- Dr. Philip Bigelow, University of Waterloo
- Dr. Ron House, St. Michael's Hospital and the University of Toronto
- Dr. Gary Liss, Ministry of Labour and the University of Toronto
- Dr. James Purdham, University of Toronto
