The Fatalities and Immediate Response (FAIR) Partnership

The FAIR partnership is a joint project of the Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB), the Ministry of Labour (MOL), Threads of Life, and the Office of the Worker Adviser (OWA). Its goal is to provide timely and comprehensive assistance to survivors following a traumatic workplace fatality.

The WSIB’s role in the FAIR partnership is to administer the WSIB benefits to which a survivor would be entitled, to ensure contact by a WSIB Crisis Intervention Counsellor within 48 hours of the fatality and to make appropriate referrals to the MOL, OWA, Threads of Life, and other community resources.

There are four types of WSIB benefits that can be claimed by survivors of workers who die as a result of a workplace injury or illness:
    • Survivor Payments
    • Funeral Costs
    • Bereavement Counselling
    • Help in Joining the Workforce
You can obtain detailed information on these benefits by downloading the Survivors Benefits Guide (263k, pdf).

For further information on the FAIR partnership, please contact Irene Hocko, manager in the WSIB’s Occupational Disease and Survivor Benefits Program, by phone at 416 344 2346 or by e-mail at irene_hocko@wsib.on.ca.
