    Preventing Occupational Illness In Your Workplace: Other Resources

    Canadian Health and Safety Resources

    Canada’s Occupational Health and Safety (CANosh) web site enables easy access to occupational health and safety information provided by the federal, provincial and territorial governments of Canada and by the Canadian Centre for Occupational health and Safety (CCOHS).

    Occupational Disease Panel Electronic Library (DDP) published approximately twenty Reports of Findings and numerous other publications on issues relating to workplace/occupational diseases and their compensation.

    Through OSH Answers, the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety provides information on a variety of topics including WHMIS (legal obligations, program elements, auditing) and how to prevent exposure to chemicals and other substances.

    The Canadian Hearing Society provides access to subject matter experts, audiology information, technical devices and education.

    Health Canada’s site provides information on the surveillance, prevention, control and research of diseases.

    The Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) is Canada's national hazard communication standard and this site contains information about the requirements of the legislation.

    Human Resources and Skills Development Canada provides information on WHMIS and federal health and safety legislation and regulations.

    IPCS INCHEM provides rapid and easy access to full-test documents on chemical risks and the sound management of chemicals. This site is produced through a cooperative effort between the International Programme on Chemical Safety (IPCS) and the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS).

    The Bureau of Infectious Diseases does surveillance, research, and prevention and control activities of infectious diseases.

    The Radiation Safety Institute of Canada provides educational, technical and consultative services in radiation safety to promote radiation safety in the workplace, environment and community.

    International System Resources

    The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists develops and disseminates scientific and technical knowledge through training, publications and journals, including annual editions of the TLVs and work practices guide.

    Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are focused on developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and education activities.

    National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health conducts research and makes recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness. Their site contains resources on various health and safety topics including health hazards that can lead to occupational disease.

    Biomed World provides links to journals, associations, and databases.

    Occupational Safety & Health Administration of the United States has a number of resources including a recently launched website on noise and hearing conservation.

    The Specialized Information Services (SIS) Division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) is responsible for information resources and services in toxicology, environmental health, chemistry, HIV/AIDS, and specialized topics in health.

    Communicable Disease Surveillance and Response on the World Health Organization’s website contains resources such as guidelines and manuals on the surveillance and control of epidemic-prone diseases and guidance on how to assess surveillance systems; videos for training health professionals and raising awareness of the diseases and their treatments; and software to help analyze and compare data.

    WHO Health /Topics contains information about WHO projects, initiatives, activities, information products, and contacts.

    Haz-Map is a relational database of various health hazards that can lead to occupational diseases.

    Pubmed Abstracts provides links to abstracts of articles on a number of occupational illnesses.

    Resource Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (Lakehead University) industrial hygiene service servicing Northwestern Ontario.

    Latex Allergy Links is a not-for-profit listing of latex allergy-related sites on the internet; created and maintained by a parent of a child with latex allergy.

    Gage Occupational and Environmental Health Unit is a program within the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, that encompasses research, education and clinical assessment services.
