Safe Communities Incentive Program (SCIP)

Program Overview
SCIP promotes safety in the workplace and can help small businesses reduce their WSIB insurance premiums. Participating firms gain access to health and safety training programs, resources, and health and safety experts to help them create better, safer workplaces.
Firms can receive a fixed 5% rebate on their WSIB insurance premiums upon successful completion of SCIP.
SCIP is in its ninth successful year, and throughout its history SCIP's participants have spoken highly of the benefits.
Since 1997, more than 6000 firms in Ontario have participated in SCIP and received rebates totaling $12,614,561. Join the firms in your community that have improved their health and safety and received a rebate from the WSIB.
Details
Firms that participate in SCIP and complete the following requirements are eligible to receive a fixed 5% rebate on their WSIB premiums:
- Owner/senior manager participates in The 5 Steps to Managing Health & Safety training program. This course can be completed in class over 20 hours. The course covers:
- Leadership in health and safety
- The internal responsibility system
- Hazard identification and assessment
- Hazard controls and emergency response
- Building a health and safey program
- Return-to-work and claims management.
Participants submit program requirements at the end of the course for review by the WSIB.
Participation in SCIP does not exclude firms from participating in other incentive programs (NEER, MAP, CAD-7, Workwell) with the exception of the Safety Groups Program.

In addition to a potential 5% premium rebate, there are many other benefits to be realized by participating in SCIP and creating a safer workplace:

Research confirms employers and workers acquire safety benefits through SCIP.
Eligibility
You are eligible for SCIP if you:
- Work with an approved provider
- Are in one of the participating communities
- Are paying less than $90,000 in annual WSIB premiums
- Have not previously participated in SCIP
- Are not a current Safety Groups Program member
Firms can participate in the SCIP program for a maximum of two years.
