    Phase-out of Claim Type 16

Expanding classifications for more efficient claims management
Claim Type 16 is a classification assigned to any long-term claims with benefits (other than health care) awarded more than 24 months after the injury date.

We have reviewed how Claim Type 16 has been assigned. We have taken into account employer feedback, consequently Claim Type 16 will be phased out and will no longer be used, effective with 2001 accident claims and onward.

Beginning with your September 30, 2003 NEER statement, any claim that would have been assigned Claim Type 16 will be reassigned in one of two ways:

    1. Claim Type 13 or 14: Claims receiving Loss of Earnings benefits beyond 24 months and have received retirement contributions* are assigned Claim Type 13 for active claims, and Claim Type 14 for inactive claims.

A claim is active if there are non-health care benefits processed in the NEER statement year, and inactive if there are no such benefits processed.

    * The new retirement contribution stipulation was added to indicate the long-term status of the claim.

2.Claim Types 3 to 12: According to the established rules for assigning claim types, the claim will be assigned one of these claim types.

Claim Type 16 will continue to apply to claims from injury years prior to 2001.
